JD: I was. I had just gotten out of the [state] Senate a year or so before when this started breaking. Let me give the story real quick. In North Omaha, Nebraska there was a credit union, a federal credit union and that was run by a man named Larry King. Larry King was and you may remember and I'm sure you'll hear about him again. Or that they had been at the Republican National Convention here or they had been at this political event in Washington and the stories had to with that they were there and were used as drug couriers 13, 14-year old kids back then going through the airport could get through without anyone asking twice about anything. They pack them full of Cocaine or whatever on little backpacks they'd carry on their bodies, between their legs, etc, etc. Young boys, young girls and these kids were telling much stranger tales that seemed bizarre at the time. That they had had sex with this or that famous politician or businessman and I was the one who stood up and said this has got to be the most hilarious, ridiculous story I've ever heard. I got a letter from a kid named Paul Bonacci who was in a that these are not just fake tales.

AJ: Now later, you took his diary that went back like 5 years and ink experts and forensics experts looked at it and he had all this stuff written down.

JD: That was the strange thing about this kid. I wish I had been able to do that throughout life but apparently when he was a little boy , he was about 18 when I had meet him in jail, 17 or 18. And as a young kid his uncle or grandfather or somebody had taught him religiously to keep a diary where you mark everything down, everyday. Well, he did it in detail. So when I went and visited with him and he told me these strange tales and then you had to hear the psychiatric medical institutions in the state university say "Hey, This kid he ain't crazy. He's a multiple personality. He's probably telling the truth because multiples don't need to lie. They just switch personality. Anyway, to make a long , long bizarre story short. I found out that he was in jail because he had been in one of those intimately involved in all this, and he had to be shut up real quick making that a conclusion. Now, at the time I didn't realize that but so they locked him up and charged him with touching another boy on the outside of his pants, his cousin or something.

JD: Anyway, They have him there and I finally agreed to represent him and that lead to a long, long tale that's got me deeply involved in researching and investigating the collapse of the credit union and the personalities involved . JD: I went in January, now this is Bonacci, this is Paul Bonacci writing this. This is directly word for word from his diary.

"I went in January of 84' on every trip. I was paid by men King knew for sex. The summer of 84' sometime I was (?) and had sex with several men King knew in a hotel. I flew on (YNR) airlines, by the way it's a private airline or private charter deal and Cam airlines, another charter deal normally for King. I never had much personally to do with King only went where he told me to go.

In or on July 26th , I went to Sacramento, CA. King flew me out in a private plane from (Eplick) airfield in Omaha to Denver where we picked up Nicholas. A boy who was about 12 or 13 then we flew to Vegas to a desert strip and drove into Las Vegas to some ranch and got something [illegal narcotic shipment].

Then flew onto to Sacramento. We were picked up by a white limo and taken to a hotel. I don't remember the name of it. We meaning, Nicholas and I, were driven to an area that had big, big trees [Bohemian Grove]. It took about an hour to get there.

There was a cage with a boy in it who was not wearing anything. Nicholas and I were given these tarzan things to put around us and stuff like that. They told me to, I won't use the word, blank the boy and stuff. In other words have sex with.

At first I said No and they held a gun to my genitals I'll use the word and said do it or else lose them or something like that. I began doing it to the boy and stuff. And Nicholas had anal sex with him and stuff. We were told to blank him and stuff and beat on him. I didn't try to hurt him. We were told to put our blanks in his mouth and stuff and sit on the boys blank and stuff and they filmed it.

We did this stuff to the boy for about 30 minutes or an hour when a man came in and kicked us and stuff and in the genitals. And picked us up and threw us. He grabbed the boy and started blanking him and stuff. The man was about, I'm not sure how to say, the man was about so many inches long and the boy screamed and stuff. The man was forcing his blank into the boy all the way. The boy was bleeding from his rectum and the men tossed me and him and stuff and put the boy right next to me and grabbed a gun and blew the boy's head off.

The boy's blood was all over me and I started yelling and crying and the men grabbed Nicholas and I forced us to lie down. They put the boy on top of Nicholas who was crying and they were putting Nicholas's hands on the boys blank. They put the boy on top of me and did the same thing . They then forced me to blank the kid. It's pretty crude. They put a gun to our heads to make us do it. His blood was all over us. They made us kiss the boys lips. Anyway, a few other things. Then they made me do something I don't even want to write so I won't [cannibalism].

After that the men grabbed Nicholas and dragged him off screaming. They put me up against a tree and put a gun to my head but fired into the air. I heard another shot from somewhere and then saw the man who killed the boy drag him like a toy.

Everything including when the men put the boy in the trunk was filmed [by Hunter Thompson from Las Vegas].

The men took me with them and we went up in a plane. I saw the bag the boy was in. We went over a very thick brush area with a clearing in it. Over the clearing they dropped the boy. One said the man with the hood would take care of the body for them.

I didn't see Nicholas until that night at the hotel. He and I hugged and held each other for a long while. About 2 hours later then men or Larry King came in and told us to go take a shower since we'd had only been hosed off at some guys house. We took a shower together and were told to put on the tarazan things and after we were cleaned up and dressed in these things we were told to put on shorts, socks and a shirt and shoes and were driven to a house where the men were at some others.

They had the film and they played it . As the men watched it they passed Nicholas and I around as if we were toys....

AJ: I want to go back into the investigation. That's one of the clearest pieces of evidence. How they tried to stop it. How one of the investigators was obviously killed. Do you think this is a good place to continue?

Some little strange thing would happens and it keeps proving once again when they say this didn't happen or this couldn't have happened or whatever something new little thing comes forward that proves it . And in this case it was a call from a police the detective who was head of the patrol

He claims he was head of the State Patrol in Oregon and he told me that they had just arrested and seized a bunch of material and they found a copy of this book , "The Franklin Cover-up" which we're talking about right now and this person had this in his possession and they saw certain pages underlined . And I said " What's the person's name? ". They said "It is Russell Nelson. ". Eventually to make a long, long story short . I got him out of prison and got him up here to testify and bring pictures and tried to (see) other pictures to (confirm) the story (by the courts.) He was a key witness then that ended up in a million dollar judgment. He was Larry King's private photographer who had been going to the various things and taking pictures of the comprised politician A or whatever with a kid or with this or that.

AJ: Yeah, the report produced by the BBC people that was aired on Discovery actually showed the police admitting all this. I mean they grabbed all these videos and photo's. It's just like the finders in DC. That (outfit) with all the kids.

JD: I know it extremely well. I was a personal (?????????) . and I went there .

AJ: Yeah.

JD: That was another story.

In this case, as I identified very clearly in the book Larry King was operating and getting kids out of there and using them. JD: Anyway, they pretty well ….The head of Boys town , the head of Boys town is now an 87 year old man, a monsignor. Guess who his newest attorney is? He's hired cause he's getting old and is worried about wanting to get some things told and get some truth out. Which might happen about next week. His newest attorney is a young, well he's not young anymore is he? A man named John Decamp who wrote a book called "The Franklin Cover-up" and if anybody would have a reason to want to attack me it was him. Instead he is doing the opposite.

AJ: Now repeat that again.

JD: He hired me within the last week or ten days as his private attorney because of some of things you've been reading in the national press, pedifeila of the priest and so on . He's an old man now and he's 87 or 88.

AJ: And who is he again?

JD: He was the head of Boys town.

AJ: Oh. O.K. Monsignor…

JD: He also was the only catholic priest ever appointed as a delegate to the United Nations. He was a special delegate appointed by I think two different presidents as a representative to the United Nations on behalf of children .

AJ: And he's going to blow the whistle?

JD: He's going to provide some information that I think will rock some people and will immediately denounce him and (shut him up).

AJ: ? I hope he's got bodyguards around him right now?

JD: No, he's an old man that will probaly be an outcast once he tells this . So I've said to much on that already probaly.

AJ: That's incrediable. I tell ya you're all over the place to with a I remember the case you were trying to expose (Sheltbecker) Services and of course you're going after the whole Colinbine deal.

JD: Now I was hired by some of the teachers family of one of the teachers that was killed to represent a group of people and we have filed a lawsuit because these kids (Harrah & Cleabay?) out there that killed all these people. They were absolute unlimited addicts of a couple of video games that are just training kids to be …

AJ: Doom was produced, Doom is a military game they admit.

JD: That's correct. That's correct.

AJ: Because they've found in soldiers, in Vietnam especially most people will not fire up close on somebody and through the video games it trains them to disconnect and do it. And this will be our swat teams of the future. And now they've found out that a bunch of swat teams are actually shooting the kids too. So, it's credible. Getting back into the Franklin Cover-up.

Anyway, so I was sitting with him and I was talking to he and his wife at the man's place one night there. I said, "I don't know what to do next". I see prosecutors who are afraid to prosecute. I see politicians who shouldn't be there. I see institutions of government who have surrendered (Respectes?) because they've been comprised or corrupted or threatened or whatever. I said, "I don't know what to do! ". He said, "I'm going to tell you what to do". I said, "Thank goodness! ". He said "Get as far away from this thing as you can!. Forget you ever saw us or know it, heard it or anything else. I said, "Wait a minute! You're telling me, the former head of the CIA, particularly during the Vietnam thing and all that nonsense. I said, "You're telling me that I should just walk away from this and pretend it didn't happen ?". He said, " John, I love you. I love your kids. I love your family. He says, "Frank, that was the night that I couldn't sleep instead just go for a walk. Of course, I knew that was forbidden. Everybody knew who I was and the guards wouldn't let me out. They just ignored me and I walked down the whole hotel The most prestigious hotel right there on red square where we were staying ". That this was going to be the only victory parade I and all the cold war warriors would ever have . We wouldn't have a march down Madison Avenue like the soldiers in WWII or whatever. He said there wouldn't be any victory parade and ticker tape just march. He said, "Well Bill that's a real interesting story but for gosh sakes what's my great lesson I'm to learn to here?". He said, "Well I guess I'm trying to tell you is John sometimes there are forces to big and to evil. Even though we know their there and we know it absolutely for us to deal with it the way we would want or should , could. Therefore, you have to turn and walk away. If you want to live to fight another day". It doesn't make sense to me but anyway. Then he says, " These forces are to big and to evil and to powerful. You're going to get killed if you keep playing around! I don't want that! ". I said, "You mean there's nothing I can do? ". He said, "Well, you have to do something. The safest thing, the best thing you can do for your own safety is write your story. Tell it all is and get ridiculed may not be believed but at least if you tell it there's no reason for them to do you in. They'll just try to ridicule you ".

AJ: Yeah, because that'll make them even more powerful. They don't want to make the book a martyr.

JD: Yeap.

AJ: There is so many faucets to this. How many children were you able to confirm were involved in this and ....

JD: I can't confirm a total number. I dealt with I think probaly 25 or 30 that were really intimately involved.

AJ: A lot of these were children according to the book, the news articles, the press were children that didn't even know each other cross-referencing in the same thing.

JD: Well yes, absolutely. In other words, it wasn't cause one kid said this and the story of the good guys is that well because they make up this terrible hoax it's all a hoax perpetrated by these absolutely penniless poverty children who all got together somehow and told this tale. Get real!

AJ: There were convictions and you wrote the book and nobody sued you because . I mean these children didn't know they were flown to Sacramento and then driving for an hour and that's how long it takes to get to the Grove and they describe it in great detail and the stuff that came out earlier. I've been there for their big Ta do well it's not a small crowd but it's a big crowd. (Unintelligible) bring a body in (?) they burn it and it screams in pain and that's just the (?) stuff they do there. When skull and bones came out on Fox news last year slitting the woman's throat the blood squirts. Why isn't there a police investigation? If my neighbors saw me slitting women's throats and worshipping satan , which they were doing by the way, I'm gonna tell you in my back yard wouldn't they call the cops on me? Wouldn't the cops have probable cause, John for the search of my house?

JD: I sure think so . But then once again everything sounds so unbelievable or something .

AJ: I would expect to see the police ripping out my walls. If I saw my neighbor doing this and I reported it. I would expect a warrant and a (?) search.

JD: Yeah, I know. As I say, the problem is that gap between something outrageous and what the average human being is capable of believing based on their own human experiences.

AJ: Is that the New World Orders trick is that they do everything in plain sight so overtly it's just so arrogant so insane that the average person just can't even process it mentally?

JD: Well, I'm not sure what the plan is or isn't? I guess I'm not smart enough to know. I do know that what I wrote about and what occurred here I absolutely know and believe occurred and is pretty horrible and that's apart of some larger program or plot then I'm really worried! I'm scared for us all so to speak.

AJ: (?) So some of these people are now getting out prison? (?).

JD: Larry got out , editor got out , couple of the others got charged and paid a fine and then got felonies dropped to misdemeanors. For all practical purposes anybody who was in prison has been redeemed and somehow holy now.

  This book astounded me when I read it...I had no idea such a book even existed since I've been hiding all of these years...take it from me, these things and more happened.....I was a part of it-so to speak....bravo to the author, Paul, and Alicia...it just goes to show you what our government can and does get away with...

  Imagine a criminal organization whose members occupy the most powerful posts in a major city, including Chief of Police, local head of the FBI, publisher of a monopolistic newspaper, columnist for the newspaper, and elite businessmen.

  Now imagine these powerful people involved in a ring whose horrifying activities stretch the mind, including pedophilia, drug running, child pornography, child prostitution, and a Top Secret CIA project called Monarch.

  Such is the state of Omaha, Nebraska in the 1980s, as John Decamp's book _The Franklin Cover-up_ details.

  Scary Stuff, January 7, 2001

  I live in Omaha and I well remember when this story broke in the press. It was big news; Lindbergh baby headlines, in fact. When I saw this book was available, I knew I had to read it and find out the information that the press refused to carry. John DeCamp names names and skewers people with little regard for his own personal safety.

  I won't go into too much detail on what happened. Read the book to find that out. It is sufficient to say that there were many allegations of child abuse, homosexual encounters, drug abuse and embezzlement of monies involved. The people accused of the abuse were very prominent people in Omaha society, and still are today. DeCamp lays it all out for everyone to see. He cites sources and makes devastating charges against all those involved. He even indicts the federal government as a willing participant in this cover-up. DeCamp is most impressive when he outlines the scandals of Bob Kerrey's [a confessed war criminal who committed horrible atrocities against civilians in Vietnam War - as will soon be regularly committed by United Nations military troops inside USA] tenure as Nebraska governor in the early and mid 1980's. Several bank scandals and questionable loans cast Kerrey in a fairly sinister light. DeCamp says Kerrey used NIFA (Nebraska Investment Finance Authority) to make loans to his buddies and corporate interests. This is the same thing Bill Clinton did in Arkansas with the ADFA while he was governor, around the same time! Those wacky Democrats! What will they come up with next!

  Needless to say, some of the revelations in this book are tough to read and pretty shocking. There are explicit descriptions of unnatural acts and violent incidents. There are big drawbacks to this book, however. For one thing, DeCamp has an ego the size of a house. He is constantly patting himself on the back and makes sure everyone knows how much money he could make, how successful his career is, and how many big names he can drop. It gets old real fast and hurts the book, in my opinion. He also gets off on some weird tangents. It's one thing to brag about your involvement in the Gordon Kahl case, or the militia movement. When you start talking about a CIA project called Monarch, in which America's youth are being programmed to kill and maim, you are really stretching credulity. I even roared out loud with derision when I got to the section on Monarch. Attempting to tie one of the Franklin kids into Monarch isn't a good idea, either. It erodes credibility. Despite these parts, the book is a good examination of the entire scandal. No matter what anyone ever says, the death of Gary Caradori is EXTREMELY suspicious. No one can argue that Peter Citron isn't a pedophile, either, as he served time in prison for that crime. These two events alone cast sinister suspicion that something was going on, although whether anyone will ever know the true scope of the scandal is highly unlikely.

  Would I recommend this book? Yes, especially for the Kerrey info and the actual discussions of the Franklin cover-up. Just be sure and read this book with caution. Never believe everything you hear, see, or read!

  Heavy Reading for L:ightweight Intellects, March 18, 2002

  John DeCamp knows his audience -- ignorant, paranoid, gullible,insecure, and feeble-minded -- and this book plays right to them. DeCamp's halucinations have been thoroughly discredited by virtually everyone who has heard them; a grand jury, federal and state investigators, and just ordinary citizens with the enough sense to come in out of the rain. Reading this book, I got dizzy from all the absurdity. Keeping up with the labyrinthine plots, sub-plots, names, places and acts was all but impossible. It brought to mind that TV series "Picket Fences." But at least the writers admitted that show was a comedy. DeCamp's vivid, highly descriptive, almost worshipful descritions of acts allegedly carried out against children was so creepy that it makes you wonder about what kind of sickness is rattling around in the author's head. Instead of spending nine bucks for this craziness, donate it instead to a mental health charity. You'll feel better about yourself.

  I do believe it, I read the second edition as well, March 13, 2002 Reviewer: A reader from hanging around the USA

  I quit two jobs because I was told about Alan Bear (owner of a company I worked for) and his involvement in the Franklin cover up. So I went to the book store on my lunch hour, read portions listing his involvement, I went back to work, clocked out to never return. I had a few sleepless nights, and could not stop thinking of this haunting story. Alan Bear bought a business that I was working for a year later, I then quit that job as well.

  I met John DeCamp, I told him of how disturbed I was to read what went on, he then sent me a copy of his second edition and the transcript of the trial he won for Paul. This information is of public record, anyone that doubts the validity of this book can find all the information in court records.

  It is the most disgusting book that I have ever read, only because of the things that went on. It is very graphic in discription of what the children went through and what ugliness the "adults", let alone our government participated in. I think EVERYONE should read this book, you will never see "white collar" the same again. By the way, I wonder why Alan Bear still has so much money and power, sickening huh?

White House Is Getting Into Hollywood Act

A new short film project may be the first test of an alliance between the Bush administration and entertainment industry executives, both eager to support the war effort through media.

A short film titled "Hollywood Celebrates the Spirit of America" may be the first test of a new relationship between George W. Bush's administration and entertainment industry executives as both express an eagerness to support the war effort through media.

In the next three weeks, White House representatives are expected to tell some of Hollywood's power players which creative projects, including "Spirit of America," might improve America's image, according to producers Lionel Chetwynd and Craig Haffner.

Having the White House, in a loose sense, greenlight or endorse certain Hollywood projects emerged from a meeting last week pulled together by Chetwynd and Haffner after a request earlier this month, from the Bush administration to meet with members of the industry. The two-hour meeting included 35 producers and artists, but Chetwynd and Haffner are adamant that no one is awaiting "content orders" from Washington as a result.

"We feel the administration will come back and clearly tell us what they gleaned in the meeting, and we'll have a body of information to react against," said Haffner, executive producer of the 1999 documentary "Civil War Combat: The Wheatfield at Gettysburg."

The White House has been notified of the five-minute "Spirit of America" film currently in production by Michael R. Rhodes, who launched the project in the days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. Rhodes, a four-time Emmy Award-winning producer, envisions "Spirit of America" as an inspiring voyage through the history of U.S. film that includes clips depicting Americans' divergent beliefs. Its concept of a montage of clips has already drawn initial praise from the board of directors of the National Assn. of Theater Owners, which represents 28,000 of the 35,000 movie screens across the country. But it remains unclear what the White House would do if, for example, it is displeased with the film.

"It's not going to be jingoistic," said Rhodes. "That's one thing we're very clear about."

Rhodes is chief executive officer of Film Clips, which distributes short scenes from about-to-be-released motion pictures to educators around the country, free of charge. Richard Wong, president of the American School Counselors Assn., said on Friday he has spoken to Rhodes about possibly providing a longer version of "Spirit of America" to thousands of school counselors around the country as a vehicle for student discussions about the concept of patriotism.

White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan said the film is an example of a patriotic project created organically, without government input. She said the White House found the concept of the film "interesting."

"The film has been discussed with the White House," she said, declining to elaborate about what, if any, further input the Bush administration might have.

Resistance to possible White House suggestions, however, has been set aside as creative types—traditionally skeptical of discussing their material with government officials—reacted to the attacks on America and the subsequent realization of the deep hatred for Americans in some parts of the world. Several people at the meeting said if the White House wanted to explore polishing the national image during peacetime, it might have been met with trepidation. But now, they said, patriotism feels appropriate, and the threat of censorship seems far off.

"If people that represent the White House want to talk to us in this time of crisis, of course, we want to talk to them," said Bryce Zabel, chairman of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. "The main issue (at the meeting) was an attempt at asking, 'What is our message as a nation and who should it be communicated to?'"

Chetwynd, who wrote and executive-produced the 1995 TNT movie "Kissinger and Nixon," said critics who are worried about the "slippery slope" of propaganda and censorship are obligated to voice those concerns, loudly and often.

"But by being part of this and trying to help America through a difficult period, we should be able to ask our leaders how do we do that without fear of being called statists," he said. "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

But several industry observers, including Robert Rosen, dean of UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television, say overtures by the White House must be monitored.

"I think the notion of talking about the responsibilities media might have in relation to society is always a good thing—even more so considering the moment we're in," said Rosen. "On the other hand, if this implies the involvement of the government in the shaping of content in media there are real dangers there. Being American is affirming American values, including those of artistic expression and speech."

Another byproduct of the deadly terrorist attacks is the nonpartisan atmosphere across the country. If ever there were a moment for Bush to make inroads into predominantly Democratic Hollywood, this is it. After eight years of Bill Clinton's cozy relationship with the engineers of pop culture and strong friendships with rainmakers like Barbara Streisand, Rob Reiner and Harvey Weinstein, Bush has a tough act to follow.

"Bush is appropriately reaching out to Hollywood," said Bruce Ramer, who hosted last week's meeting at his Beverly Hills law firm. The White House representatives—Adam Goldman, associate director of the office of public liaison; and Chris Henick, deputy assistant to the president—made it clear that Bush was interested in nurturing a relationship with entertainment industry leaders. The representatives were in Los Angeles for less than 24 hours.

"There was no multitasking," Chetwynd said. "They were here only for this meeting."

Guest speaker at NPC on Predatory Lending Practices

Unfair credit practices may not be the usual fodder for comedians, but jokester Al Franken is currently campaigning against predatory lending. He was recruited to speak for the cause by his friend John Taylor, head of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, which researches how neighborhoods are hurt by unfairly denied credit.

Politics have been a consistent thread through Franken's career, which includes a stint as a CNN commentator at the 1988 Democratic National Convention. Franken also anchored Comedy Central's Indecision '92, covering both conventions and election night, and he performed at the 1994 and 1996 White House Correspondents Dinner.

Franken, now 50, was part of the original crew that created the ground-breaking comedy show Saturday Night Live. He began on the writing staff in 1975 and took a hiatus from the show from 1980-1985. After his return, Franken stayed with SNL for another ten years to pursue writing and film-making.

National Press Club History

The National Press Club has been a part of Washington life, and more significantly of downtown Washington life, for nearly a century. Its members have included four generations of American and foreign journalists, plus many of the 20th Century's foremost newsmakers, including 17 consecutive Presidents of the United States — from Theodore Roosevelt to Bill Clinton. Most have spoken from the Club's podium, some as in the case of Mr. Carter and Mr. Reagan, to announce their candidacies for the highest office in the land.

On March 12, 1908, 32 newspapermen with $300 met in the Gridiron Room of the Willard Hotel (across 14th street from the current location of the National Press Building) and framed a constitution for the National Press Club.

The Club founders laid down a credo which promised "to promote social enjoyment among the members, to cultivate literary taste, to encourage friendly intercourse among newspapermen and those with whom they were thrown in contact in the pursuit of their vocation, to aid members in distress and to foster the ethical standards of the profession."

The first quarters of the Club on the second floor of 1205 F Street NW were quickly outgrown and in 1909, only a year after The Club's founding, a move was made to a building at the corner of 15th and F Streets, known as Rhodes Tavern. Then, from 1914 to 1927, The Club was located in the Albee Building at 15th and G Streets.

When The Club was asked to move from the Albee Building, they negotiated an option on the old Ebbit Hotel at the corner of 14th and F Streets and constructed the current building on the site.

The building and The Club were to struggle financially in the Depression, but the Club was on the way to being recognized as one of the world's premier journalistic organizations. Regular weekly luncheons for speakers began in 1932 with an appearance by President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt.

An average of 70 luncheons each year provide a national forum for the views of Presidents, Prime Ministers, business and cultural leaders, members of the Cabinet and Congress. Over the years, major news has been made at The Club: Nikita Khrushchev, Winston Churchill, Madame Chiang Kai Shek, Golda Meir, Indira Gandhi, Charles deGaulle, Boris Yeltsin, Nelson Mandela, Yasir Arafat and many others have made headlines at the Press Club podium.

Even a brief history of The Club would be incomplete if it failed to mention a couple of examples of the stodginess in its internal affairs. The Club did not open its ranks to black reporters until 1955 and women were excluded until 1971.

Henry Kissinger came to the National Press Club here in Washington, D.C. last night to give a talk, sell his latest book, Does America Need a Foreign Policy? and take questions from an audience of about 300 people.

We weren't as interested in the talk or the book as much as the question period. We figured, correctly as it turned out, that Henry hadn't change over the years -- his unspoken theory of foreign policy was still the same: the corporate state -- including his client corporations -- should dictate the country's foreign policy. As usual, his words barely masked that reality.

But scattered throughout the ballroom at the Press Club were little white note cards for questions, and it appeared that perhaps 100 questions were scribbled and sent up to the moderator, Richard Koonce, a member of the Press Club's book and author committee.

It was Koonce's job to sift through the questions, pick out some interesting ones, and ask Henry some probing questions. This system seemed to work well at luncheon talks, where the past three presidents of the Press Club -- Doug Harbrecht of Business Week, John Cushman of the New York Times and Dick Ryan of the Detroit News -- would ask speakers some pretty tough and newsworthy questions. We never got the sense that Press Club moderators were pulling punches.

Last night, things changed.

Earlier this year, Harper's magazine published a two-part series of articles by British journalist Christopher Hitchens, "The Case Against Henry Kissinger that has since been published as a book, The Trial of Henry Kissinger (Verso).

Hitchens has drawn up an indictment, charged Kissinger with war crimes, and is begging some government to go after the former Secretary of State under Richard Nixon for the killings of innocents in Laos, Cambodia, South America, East Timor and elsewhere.

Magistrates in three countries -- Chile, Argentina, and France -- have responded and summoned Kissinger to answer questions.

Le Monde reported earlier this month that when French Judge Roger Le Loire had a summons served on Kissinger on May 31 at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, Kissinger promptly left the hotel, and then left town. The judge wanted to ask Kissinger about his knowledge of Operation Condor, an effort by the dictators of South America to kill or "disappear" dissidents.

The fact that Kissinger was being sought for questioning didn't make the mainstream media here in the United States, until yesterday's New York Times reported that the Chilean judge wanted Kissinger to "testify about the disappearance of an American in Chile when the dictator Augusto Pinochet seized power in the 1970s."

Kissinger began lashing back at Hitchens last week, not by answering the substance of Hitchen's argument, but by smearing the journalist.

Kissinger told Detroit radio talk show host Mitch Albom that Hitchens had "denied the Holocaust ever took place."

In response, Hitchens, who says both and he his wife are Jewish, told the New York Post: "Mr. Kissinger will be hearing from my attorney, who will tell him two things he already knows -- what he said is false, malicious and defamatory, and if he says it again, we will proceed against him in court."

So, you can imagine that the Press Club audience had questions. And so did we.

We wrote down six questions -- about the report in the Times, Kissinger's interview with Albom, the incident at the Ritz Hotel in Paris, Hitchen's articles in Harper's, about the three magistrates and simply this one: "If you are indicted for war crimes, will you defend yourself in court?"

We met a friend there who told us that in the 1970s, when Kissinger was asked about the bombing of Laos and Cambodia, he responded this way: "sometimes we have to operate outside the law."

Her question to Kissinger: "How do you square that with our Constitutional values?"

Koonce had other ideas. He lofted six or seven puff balls about Kissinger in China, about Kissinger on Nixon, about his generic views of foreign policy. Nothing about war crimes, nothing about operating outside the law, nothing about Hitchens.

After the event, we sought out Koonce.

"Was there an agreement with Dr. Kissinger not to ask questions related to Christopher Hitchens and allegations of war crimes?"

To our surprise, Koonce did not deny it.

"There was a definite sensitivity to that," Koonce said. "He [Kissinger] was afraid that if we got into a discussion of that, for the vast majority of people that, it would take so much time to explain all of the context, that you know, he preferred to avoid that, and so . . ."

And so Kissinger's wishes were accommodated and the questions were avoided.

We asked Koonce how many written questions dealt with Hitchens or war crimes? Two or three, Koonce said.

We knew this not to be true. We handed up six ourselves. And we suspect that there were many more. (Only Kissinger knows for sure, since it's Press Club policy to deliver the written questions to the guest after the event.)

According to Press Club standards, these book events must be held in accordance with the Club's "Code of Ethics."

So, we want to know -- how can it be ethical to agree secretly with an author before hand not to ask a certain set of questions?

It's been a great month for the National Press Club, and you've helped make it a rewarding first month for me. Our Speakers Committee has brought the leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan to the NPC, along with the outgoing U.S. Surgeon General, the head of the American Stock Exchange and more.

By the end of the month you will find a new link on our web site, taking you to a page titled "Free Press Network at the National Press Club." There you'll find all of the NPC's own statements and letters on press freedom and First Amendment issues, along with links to other journalism organizations active on these fronts. There will also be a link to let you volunteer to help us monitor abuses in these areas.

We also will form partnerships to work more effectively for press freedom and freedom of information. And I am pleased to announce that under our Freedom of Information Chair, Kirsten Mitchell of Media General, we will be forming a free press network --- a network of journalists first, within the National Press Club, then expanding nationally and internationally, to monitor press and information freedom issues. When problems arise --- and they do, now, with greater and greater frequency --- we will bring them to public attention. We will protest vehemently to those responsible for denial of access or suppression of information. We will advocate, not litigate. But we will speak with an ever stronger voice. And when journalists are directly threatened --- as they are now in Zimbabwe and Haiti, we will continue to speak out to help protect them.

I want to thank the Bush White House for its recent statement strongly protesting a Russian court decision that could result in liquidation of Russian's independent television network. But I wish that President Bush would show the same concern for press and information freedom issues here at home. I call on President Bush to instruct his Vice President, his Attorney General and his Secretary of Defense on a basic principle of our democracy: that is, that it is critical to have a fully informed citizenry, so that they might knowledgeably participate in governing our nation. When the Justice Department authorizes the wiretapping of an Associated Press reporter, to find out where that reporter might be getting his information; when the Vice President will not tell the press and public who had a part in formulating our nation's energy policy; when the Pentagon ensures that critical moments in a war take place with no independent witnesses present to report to readers and viewers --- when those things are allowed to happen, our democracy is undermined.

I thank the San Francisco Chronicle for bringing to our attention the latest outrage. Attorney General John Ashcroft, in a memo to federal agencies, has urged them to resist most Freedom of Information Act requests. You might recall that the Freedom of Information Act was passed in 1974, to correct abuses of closed-door government in the Watergate era. As the Chronicle notes, it is our national sunshine law, and it is a critical tool for reporters and private citizens who want to know how and why our government really does things. General Ashcroft, rescind that memorandum.

Many of you have heard me speak before about how central journalism education --- that is, continuing education --- is to the National Press Club. We are doubling our budget for professional development this year, and it will be the centerpiece of my year in office. We should and must be the center of journalism in Washington and the nation. We have fine restaurants, a convivial bar and lounge, social events which provide fellowship opportunities for journalists and communicators --- and none of those will lack on my watch. But the future of the National Press Club is our effort, our leadership, in professional affairs. And this is all the more important at a time when those who employ us are pressed financially. As our resources are strained, we need better professional and intellectual toolkits to do our jobs.

Speaking of financial strains, we, no less than other corporations, states, families, are under financial pressure. If there is no economic recovery, we could face very serious problems before this year ends. I ask your cooperation, your help, in keeping our financial house in order, and in finding new ways to bolster our own economic security. One senior elected official told me this week --- these were his words, "I don't want to sound like Herbert Hoover, but I truly believe prosperity is just around the corner." We will pray that he's right, but plan as if he could be wrong. And even if he should be wrong, with your hard work and mine, I promise that we are going to have a superb year.

Daniel Pearl Mourned; Attacks on Journalists Condemned

The National Press Club is deeply saddened by the death of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter taken hostage a month ago by Islamic extremists in Pakistan. Pearl died practicing the most basic principle of journalism - pursuit of the truth. Sadly, Pearl's name will be added to the scores of journalists killed for simply doing their jobs. His murder is a tragedy and a crime that must not be forgotten. Violence against journalists serves no one's interests. The National Press Club extends its sympathies to Pearl's family and to his colleagues at the Journal.

The National Press Club is greatly concerned about Pentagon plans to provide possibly false news to foreign media outlets in an effort to sway public sentiment toward America.

The Office of Strategic Influence's developing campaign should under no circumstances use the media, foreign or domestic, as a propaganda machine. Among the cornerstones of democracy in the United States and many of our allied countries is a press that operates completely separately from the government.

Those lines cannot be blurred; doing so would undermine the independent press worldwide.

It is obvious, too, that American news organizations could publish or broadcast false information planted by the Pentagon with foreign media organizations, such as Reuters or Agence France-Presse. That likelihood is heightened by a world in which information is transmitted around the globe with lightning speed. Surely it would be only a matter of time before American news organizations unwittingly publish or broadcast false information.

I also suggest the impropriety of teaching U.S. military officers that it is acceptable to disseminate falsehoods. I refer you to West Point's Honor Code: "A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do."

As an organization of nearly 4,500 journalists, public information officers and regular news sources in Washington, D.C., and around the globe, the National Press Club strongly urges you to reject any proposed campaign of disinformation from the Pentagon.
